E(x) = x1/n+ x2/n + ... + xn/n = (x1 + x2 + ... + xn) / n

Why is the notion of the expected value the most important in the theory of chances? It turns out that it's possible with its help to predict the estimate of value of some random characteristic within rather long period of time.

Using the analogy with the centre of gravity we may say that any physical body in an uncertain state will strive for equillibrium, like average evaluation of some random quantity will strive for its expected value.
This fact is strictly proved in the course of the theory of chances.
